Bazaar

October 25th, 2006  |  Published in general, tech  |  8 Comments

Selamat Hari Raya Adilfitri and Eid Mubarak! I ran off to Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya for the weekend, for no particular reason other than to go to a proper Ramadan bazaar, and to eat. Food is such a big part of Asian culture, and this is seen in a big way in the Malay community here in Southeast Asia especially during the festive season; Malay food remains one of my favourites, and never ceases to make me feel at home.

I had the opportunity to go to the bazaar at Taman Tun Ismail, Petaling Jaya. Compared to the bazaar in Geylang in Singapore, there are subtle differences: sometimes vendors come from other parts of Malaysia, and you are able to find regional Malay specialties you don’t come across elsewhere, especially the northern Malay I’ve become fond of. Instead of being an all night affair, like the one in Singapore, the bazaars in Malaysia close after dinner time (around 7pm) is over.

A big part of my photography has to do with street culture and food; more so when they’re together. So I present to you: Bazaar, a slideshow of 86 images of the wondrous, glorious food at a typical Ramadan bazaar. Not on Flickr yet but will be sometime later. (Not work safe: might make you VERY hungry.) My camera smells of a combination of satay, ayam percik and steamed coconut, because I was running into the smoke so much. I lurvveee ayam percik. Aku nak makan ayam percik… skarang! (That’s all the Malay I know..) Southeast Asia is not a good place to be for vegetarians.

walau, the food in KL really makes the substandard fare at our local pasar malams look really lame. Same old 15 stalls of Ramli burger and the fish keropok. Cannot tahan!

By the way, satay from any angle smells as good. As illustrated by your 140 pictures.

You’re right, totally not work safe. In fact, totally not foreigner safe either ;-) I’m counting down the days I return home to Malaysia now (yes, I’ve got the countdown widget sitting in Dashboard now). I’m hungry… hmm…

Looks like you had a good time. This is something I clearly miss, one month of Ramadhan food. Yum.

Not a good idea for a Singaporean in the UK to read your blog. I think I’m drooling.
