No Way To Caption This

*Update:* Can I just say the point of this really isn’t about the bratwurst, or about the curry, it’s about the beer. And that this post has been officially certified as halal.

Joke:

spot the discrepancy

Punchline: Halal sausages with beer.

This comes close to the “Muslim curry with pork”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/skinnylatte/31487803/ picture I took earlier.

It’s just worrying because: 1. This came through the school mail 2. Evidently nobody’s spotted the discrepancy 3. This was from a club that is supposedly interested in facilitating understanding across cultures (specifically, with exchange students, but still). 4. To be pedantic, “bratwurst”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bratwurst is usually pork, so a halal bratwurst is as good as.. halal _char siew_.

All that said, I like my beer with a good head of foam, but does the beer in the picture just look unappetising or what?

(And if you think gratuitous HTML in email is bad, wait until you look at the mailing practices of this school where 4 out of 5 emails consist entirely of jpegs and bmps, and distastefully so.)

  • What’s an ustaz?!

    erk.
  • Gabriel as an ustaz is a scary thought!
  • Hehe
  • Heh. I think anon summed it up pretty well.

aiyah, popagandhi was just making a joke! halal bratwurst + beer = funny okay! Agagooga want to be ustaz for what?
  • I can’t answer that and I won’t try, I’ve had too many bratwursts this month.

You misinterpret my point about the Hanafi school. I’m not saying we shouldn’t ask whether or not alcohol should be encouraged — I’m saying that in the context of this discussion (your raising of the point that alcohol may or may not be makruh, and the fact that this poster was issued in a predominantly Shaffi environment), halal sausages with beer, in the first place, is a non-starter.
  • What does Christianity really say? That’s the million dollar question people have been arguing about for 2 millennia. If you can answer that you’ll get more than a beer and a (halal) bratwurst sausage from me :)

Err. Most muslims in Saudi Arabia are from the Wahhabi school. Is there a point in asking whether women should be allowed to vote?
  • Whether or not some Muslims do this or that is not the point. Some Christians believe abortion is murder. Some Christians believe in choice. Some Christians are uncomfortable with the speaking of tongues. But what does Christianity really say?

And since the majority of Muslims here are not from the Hanafi school, then there isn’t really a point in saying that alcohol is or is not encouraged, is there?
  • Actually it seems drinking non-wine intoxicants is permitted by the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam if you don’t get drunk.
  • muslims in singapore a really open. they do drink… and there’s mats and minahs… the malay versions of bengs and lians…

this is what you get out of a varied city, yes?
  • Yes, my bad. I heard wrongly from my friend. It’s smoking that’s makruh.

There’re some Muslims who eat at haram places, but just avoid pork. There’re also some who eat pork, but that’s another story…
  • anon
Actually Agagooga, both pork and alcohol are haram (cannot do). Makruh = can do but better not to do. Smoking would be makruh.

The pseudo-halal places don’t get MUIS certs, but it doesn’t make alc halal. It just means that certain Muslims may eat there but not drink. Others will only eat at certified places. This much is an individual thing, but I would think that even people who profess to be Muslim but nevertheless drink would say that drinking alcohol is haram, not makruh…
  • en
    this is worrying because

    4. it’s been blown up on a big banner below the li ka-shing library for all the world to see.
  • so is ISD considering taking action? calling a muslim a babi n offering them halal pork sausages… wat’s the diff… =Pp

Anyway, popagandhi, u remember during the pig crisis 1-2 yrs back when the pigs got sick and we got no pork..ppl did come up with chicken charsiew that could be halal i guess, but that sucked big time…no texture..hah
  • And it’s Thai Islam style peanut Curry. Thai Muslim style curry doesn’t need to be Halal.

It’s just like places serving Halal Chinese Food – same principle.

    (Sorry for cross posting)
  • Actually not all Muslims hold that alcohol is haram. That’s why you see many pseudo-Halal places with Halal food but serving alcohol.

I am informed that alcohol is one step below in the hierarchy of sin from pork. Pork is under “cannot do”, alcohol is “can do but better not to do”.
  • but what’s the point of embedding your message inside a picture/attachment? they’re missing the point of email. it violates my personal principles!!
  • nothing unusual with the bmps, they come with my school mail all the time too.
  • kinda like tat scene in Chang Kang’s hilarious Dao Bao. “char siew bun got pork or not”

    hootie
  • Good grief. The food-purist in me is screaming. Now I’ll never get back to sleep.
  • I have a good caption!

“We’re so different, beer is actually water cooler juice.”

Taupok sorry I played you out today, I will come and hug you tomorrow. Hahaha.
  • Dawn
Haven’t you heard? OSL forbade the fest people to send appealing images of beer through school mail. So they filled an empty mug with brand new water cooler juice instead. Very innovative ah.
