Asus Eee PC

Right place, right time.

Right place: Taipei, home of Asus, the maker of that amazing little sub notebook that costs and weighs almost nothing (0.92kg!!).

Right time: A few days after the announcement of the souped up, 8GB version with 1GB RAM (as opposed to the standard 4GB with 512MB), with ready stock in Taipei stores.

Right place and right time — being in Taipei in December 2007 and living in a hotel right next to a computer mall with good prices.

I got it in white, and it costs a cool NTD$14000 — or S$644 (US$445). It is unbelievable. The Xandros Linux on it is not so cool, but that’s alright cos I’m going to put Ubuntu in it. Soon. Once I have the time to sit down and do things like that. The preloaded Xandros isn’t awful, in fact I felt right at home in the operating system (having tinkered around with Debian Linux distros a long time ago); it just… doesn’t cut it. Besides, Ubuntu rocks.

Now I can really look forward to the future I’ve been preparing for — of having a computer surgically attached to my arm.

Seriously though, the price for this thingy isnt exactly all that cheap for the components… it will be cheap enough if they have a decent sized screen for the same price. Still i like it though. Hehz.

I have to run XP on mine becoz Openoffice doesnt cut it enough for me and OS X cant be installed on it without driver problems.

An 8gb Eee for US$445 is cheap. Over here in the U.S. it’s going for US$499.

ah i rem another thing that’s holding me back from this..
the screen res of Eee is only 800×600 i think which is tricky for dialog boxes that can’t be resized.. but chk out the above link on how to install off a usb drive
has info on how to resize
