Jagannath Mandir temple workers lift the heavy wooden top of Goddess Subhadra’s chariot, 6 days before the Puri Rath Yatra 2007. Subhadra’s chariot is always red and black; Balabhadra’s is green, and Lord Jagannath — the star of the party — has a massive yellow and red chariot. 1072 logs from Orissan forests, 1200 metres of cloth from local mills and from Bombay and Ahmedabad, 400 metres of coir ropes from the Kerala Coir Corporation. Each chariot is almost 15 metres tall, and built anew each year.

Location: Puri, Orissa, India

They chop it up and use it as firewood for the kitchen!

The Jagannath temple’s kitchen, I mean. Which is massive — it feeds a few thousand people daily.
