Tuckshop

Right before checking out tonight’s so you think you’re andro semi-finals at Play, where my friend June also celebrated her flirtieth birthday (happy flirtieth!), we starving folks checked out the one month old cafe next door. Who won’t love a name like theirs? I haven’t heard the word “tuckshop” (i.e. canteen) since primary school!
A small little place nestled between Play (yes, the gay bar, on the premises of the old Happy) and Oso, their food menu is small and simple. I was told their steak sandwich is the rockstar of the show, and it was superb. Real steak. Real lovely steak with a portobello mushroom. Other items are only around $5-8. Tuckshop was set up by a bunch of lawyer and architect friends. A band, The Bandits, plays there on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I hadn’t heard of The Bandits before but I liked what I heard very much. On weekends said architect owner and other DJs take up the decks and spin music.
They are a month old and have only just begun opening for lunch between 11.30 am and 2.30pm, dinners in the evenings. I love simple and honest food; it can be so hard to find that sometimes. Affordable, simple, honest food with cheap beer and good music? Am I dreaming? (Note to self: always trust friends who are/have been food reviewers. June never lets me down!)
