Epicurious

Why I haven’t been updating: I’ve been very busy eating. Eating my hearts out and re-discovering my city â since I will be away from it for 2 months, very soon. I’ve heard much about Epicurious over the last couple of years but never came around to looking for it. Now that the Robertson Quay area is not-so-ulu (and in fact rather hip), I’m spending much more time in the area and am constantly trying out places I haven’t been. I must be the last person to try Epicurious â but man. That burger (it was never-ending, right down to every last morsel). The lovely old school cups, the great people.
P.S. If anyone has eating tips for Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Konark, Hyderabad, Delhi, Pokhara, Kathmandu (or elsewhere in Nepal), Bombay, Mangalore and Bangalore â please let me know!
chomps!

There’s a small sort of hidden place in Patan Durbar Square (KTM) where you can go for choela and chaang. It’s next to a brass shop and near one of those multi-storey hotel/cafes overlooking everything.. if you go straight from the entrance of the Square and walk for a while it should be on your left.
Also when are you going to Nepal? I am going in through Sunauli next week.

Hi Adrianna,
Chennai eats:
Check out the rooftop BBQ garden at Hotel Ranjith (food so-so but atmosphere and Kingfisher in LARGE pewter pitchers are pukka!)
Saravana Bhavan as usual for tiffin
If you’re craving Chinese food, there’s a restaurant called Dynasty (I forget where it is but auto drivers should know) that has funky Indian-flavoured Chinese dishes. The stuffed crab shell is Divine.
I love the street shops for their thaali meals (full vegetarian) so i would recommend any in the pondy bazaar area.
hope this helps- enjoy!

don’t forget to get Vada Pav accompanied by Nimbu Paani (lime juice) in Mumbai… that’s awesome street food. Cheap, affordable and very filling!

In Chennai:
I like Saravana Bhavan. If you feel like splurging on Chinese food, Chola Sheraton has a pretty authentic restaurant. But then, in India, I’d rather go for the street food than Chinese cuisine, where I can so easily find in non-traveling life.
I haven’t been to Chola for years. Those were the days when I still had a company that paid for my stay there. I remember a fine tandoori restaurant there. The waiters would help you put on a bib once they have seated you. The portions were huge and I felt like I was eating like a maharaja.
In Bangalore:
Again, street food. If you happen to be in the MG Road area, there’s a nice chaathouse (can’t remember its name) on the little road running parallel to MG Road. If you can find the Wipro office (housed in an old 6-7 storey building), it’s just round the corner not far away.

Mumbai:
- Peshawri in the Grand Sheraton ITC in Adheri is supposed to be one of the best Indian restaurants in Mumbai, according to my native Indian friends. I loved the grilled prawns and the naan when I ate there last year.
- Ling’s Pavilion in Colaba is supposed to serve great Chinese food, done Indian style. It was featured in Cheuk Kwan’s Chinese Restaurants series.
I didn’t try any street food as I was there for business and couldn’t afford to get sick. Make sure you always drink bottled water and not from the tap - even when brushing your teeth!

Hey,
For Chennai, you must check out this place called Karpagam Mess. It’s next to Rasi Silk House in Mylapore. Very small and old fare, but imho, THE best dosai, idli, etc and coffee in the world! Have fun!

I’d usually second KB’s suggestion, but Karpagam mess is going down the cleanliness hill. And the food is jumping off and committing mass suicide.
Check out Chennai Metblogs - the team there has a suggestion up on where to eat. :)

Your blog makes a very refreshing read! When you are in Madras, you ought to try the Murugan Idli Kadai - small, noisy place, but excellent idlis. Also, have you visited the sugarcane-wallahs (T.Nagar Ranganathan St, etc)? The sugarcane juice is just divine - perfect after a hot afternoon of shopping! You could refer to the Madras cuisine guide published weekly in ‘The Hindu’. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/mp/mpcl06.htm
Cheers!
