Hello Krabi

April 14th, 2007  |  Published in dispatch, tech, travel  |  14 Comments

Had a short stopover in Krabi tonight. Will catch the boat to Ko Phi Phi tomorrow, but managed to finally have the chance to walk around the town despite having passed through it before. It was a nice enough town, though sleepy. The cars never honk, everybody’s friendly, there’s good food everywhere, and while walking through Chao Fa Road we smelt a familiar smell of Chinese style beef horfun. The cook (we called him His Ancientness) looked like a mad old genius, obsessed by his craft — and the food, at 20 baht, was a steal. You wouldn’t usually have stepped into a nondescript shop like that; it seemed like it’d been there since the 1940s and nothing’s changed; it’s probably true. He also gave me the finger when I tried for a picture.

It’s songkran (the Thai new year) weekend so there was a huge riverside market, fair and concert: bags and bags of steamed cockles, lovely beef horfun, 50 baht grilled prawns by the river and Singha. Thailand doesn’t feel like a foreign country; coming here feels like… well, not travelling, which is great. Despite being songkran, we managed to stay dry; that custom of splashing buckets of water on anyone who passes, seemed to have passed by the time we landed. Wy, SL and I are sharing the bed to save money; at S$5 each for a very decent pad, I’m not complaining.

Tomorrow, finally — shacking up at my beloved Ao Toh Ko waiting for my little motley crew to assemble over the next 3 days.

Most of the following are straight out of the camera with Voigtlander 125mm macro; a wonderful piece of optics that make me feel like I need 10 consecutive days of massages because of its heft and manual focusing.

Nice manual focusing there, Adri! Great clean colours too. His Ancientness is like the Pai Mei of beef horfun, ha ha. Have fun in PP!

I use a Canon 350D body; eyeing a 5D lustfully right now though.

And — the SMU term is long over, exams and all, thankfully.
