    Congrats !!! ( :

Congratulations, Adri! Wow! I have been to the other “small” wettest place on Earth, Waialeale in Kauai; hiked and camped there once. It was not long, and I remember the rain coming down in sheets so thick you couldn’t even see the drops. Wow, salut to the people of Cherrapunjee, they are a hardy bunch! Thanks for sharing your article. :)

kewl! wld lurve a hardcopy of the mag ‘tho. is mr canton gonna mail u a couple? ;)

    thanks!

flying: mr caton lives in new delhi now and is more likely to mail me photos of HIV and leprosy patients rather than copies of the Geo — in fact mr caton probably hasn’t even seen the magazine himself! :) i still can’t figure out - are you damien or greg?

    flyingmuffyn

the former ; ) oops realised i called him Canton =))

    you da (whoa) man!

From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you’re on vacation in another city and “Jeopardy” comes on at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30.

who is the lucky princess joining in ko phi phi? hehe

Nicely written. I like the way you’ve removed personalizations from your writing (even if this is accidental, it’s still good). Also, since I hope to go to Chera as soon as the monsoons kick in, this is a lovely primer.

Aayush: Thanks! Are you planning to stay in Cherra, or day trip there from Shillong? There’s only one place to stay — Cherrapunjee Holiday Homes.

If you stay there in the monsoon it might be half price (400 instead of 800); and also Dennis, the proprietor (from Madurai, who married a Khasi girl) is a treasure trove of information about Cherra. I highly recommend it, though it’s some distance from Cherra town — you pretty much need a driver (and if so, drop me a line, I have a phone number for you for a good reliable driver). There is a place in Cherra proper you can stay in, at Circuit House, an old British house but staying there involves going to the Sub District Office and writing in to the administration: having done that myself I don’t recommend the experience, but if they let you through you get a great room smack in the town, beautiful scenery, beautiful house, for the princely sum of 60 rupees. ;P With a fireplace, it’s very surreal.

Let me know if you need any information about Cherrapunjee — I made some good contacts there!

swissfondue: one step at a time. the big vision for the year is to break into the new york times’ travel page. :P the book? it’s… incubating.

Well done, Adri - nice article & pics. Was trying to figure out where to look for Brit Geo here in Singapore, short of ordering it in specially (was even wondering whether to ask our Nat Geo suppliers), so good of you to add in a link. Best wishes for your finals!

    • And btw, in case you didn’t know, one of the restaurants you like so much is featured in the latest 8 Days … maybe check that out when you need a break yeah :)*

    Dear Adrianna,
Thank you very much for sending me a soft copy of the article. Just last week, Peter Caton sent me a copy of the magazine from Mumbai. I showed it to Arky. He too was thrilled. He has taken the magazine to show it to those people you had interviewed.
Wish you God Speed in your writing career and your personal life.
We usually go choke a block during the monsoon. We do not have any off season rates. The current rates are Rs.1200/= and Rs.1080/-.
    Love from Carmela and me.
