A blink, a cut, a flash of light â then you open your eyes, and suddenly you can see, after 12 years.
That’s what they’re going to do to me this Friday, and what they will do to accomplish that, in a nutshell: cut a flap in my cornea tissue (leaving a hinge to fold it back later), then use an excimer laser to vaporize the molecular bonds of my cornea at a fraction of the thickness of human hair. All I will see is a flash of white and orange light, and after 10 to 15 minutes, they will fold my cornea flap back into place, and I will have (hopefully) perfect eyesight. All that, while I’m awake.
And for the price of a MacBook Pro!
What I filled in for “Reasons for LASIK” on the form: “Frequently travel to developing countries â air pollution irritates contact lenses. Too vain to wear glasses.”
It’s sad that my self-esteem is inversely related to the weight on my nose bridge, but there is it.
(Apparently, I look intellectual with my glasses. Pol Pot used to kill intellectuals in his ruthless Khmer Rouge regime, and how they picked out intellectuals was whether or not they wore glasses. Although as Ricky Gervais says, if they were so intellectual, take them off when you see them coming!)

You won’t be able to blink during the procedure as you’ll have a special clamp holding your eyelids open.
Had mine done almost 3 months ago. Best thing I ever did. I had the flap done with a keratome and then the lasering. A few minutes each eye in total. The great thing is I can now wear sunglasses so I’m seeing all these great polarised scenes and thinking “that would make a great photograph.” :)
The surgeon just tells you to stare at the (red in my case) light so you see very little as they’re doing it. Vision goes black only very briefly. I went from a -4.0 to a 6.0 and 6.5. The next day I was legally able to drive a car without glasses.
The surgery is usually followed up by a big sleep and then you’ll have to take various eyedrops for a few weeks afterward.

i did mine a couple of weeks ago. you’ll never regret it.. other than not being able to smoke for more than a week because of the risk of infection. =)
