Singlish Security Lecture

October 16th, 2006  |  Published in general  |  18 Comments

Wah, ang moh also can speak Singlish. Do comedy skit somemore.

The Mr (Light) Brown Show (that’s what they call themselves).

Chalk up 50 points for effort, 30 points for weirdness (a good kind; their location references are all in my neighbourhood — since their school is located in my estate). Go opposite stall number 8 eat mee siam!

I listened to there (your?) BBC podcast. They remind me a bit of that crazy japanese TV show in Lost in Translation where Bill Murray appears as guest. Amusing, but in small dosis only :)
  • swissfondue
damn, no way to edit speling miztakse.
  • Agrainofsand
oh man, this is great - I have to show my american friends what real singlish is like!
  • straydog
Wah! Ang Moh speaks Singlish. So impless ah...
  • seffy
    Lol! Impressive.
  • Seth
Stall 38 right? Haha I live near the area too, gonna try it some time.
  • popagandhi
seth: i don't know the stall number, but the mee soto and soto ayam better. especially in the late afternoon and evenings when all the stuff gets left behind in the pot. the chilli there is amazing.. (any chilli that still gets me, is considered amazing..)! it's the one next to the mamak selling mutton chop and other indian muslim food, in the middle of the row of three muslim food stalls. at west st 2.
  • Dhany
Oh my goodness. I graduated from this school in 2005 O_O I have no words.
  • Kevin
Impressive. Reminds me of "Chee and Chong", or some kind of role reversal... :P
  • Seth
Ooo. Haha I didn't know what's nice there, just know that there's this western food stall with lamb chops that are not too bad. Usually eat too much MacDonald's... Heh.

(Err could we edit comments? Realized I got my URL wrong earlier -.-", but nvm)

Seth: err... yes, when i get less lazy about installing new plugins. :)

western food stall.. errryeahh.. there's so much good food there! the mamak stall's mutton chops are the bomb (i stopped patronizing my ex-favourite stall at tekka market, after discovering 'eating opposite where i've lived all my life', at age 20).

if you walk to the coffeeshop behind the temple, there's Ah Lam noodles. excellent bakchor mee, comes with abalone if you order, and they have very unique soup: the bakchor mee soup comes stewed with apples. there're pictures of jay chou and famous people plastered all over their walls.. think it's a breakaway from the famous racecourse road stall (their rival, their brother, is at cuppage and they hate each other. why do i know about hawkers' turf wars? cos speaking hokkien gives you access to things like that!).. the famous XO fish bee hoon is also in that area. moved to the coffeeshop somewhere in between sheng shiong and the west coast park. there's pretty good chicken rice at the market. comes with a great herbal soup. the popiah next to the oyster omelette shop is amazing. it's only $1 each! same stall also sells pretty decent wanton noodles and mushroom chicken noodles, and opens late into the night (it's my 'mugging food').

i also like the other hawker centre further down at the block 500-somethings. great choice of muslim food and the best teh tarik, seafood, rojak (in the west).

"eh eh eh.. don't laugh! It's no laughter matter!"

Brilliant! Bloody Brilliant! That kid either has lived here all his life, or is a genius at studying our speech patterns.
  • LTH
nAl, picking up Singlish is not all that difficult if you are immersed in the environment. I spoke like a native Singlish speaker after just a month of being surrounded by Singaporeans. And this is in Brisbane. I am now mistaken to be Singaporean/ lived in Singapore nine out of ten times. :D
  • grace
Woo! I moved here 6 months ago and i've gotten really sick of duck rice, which is about all my parents ever buy from the hawker centre. Thanks for the food reccs!
  • eileen
    breathtaking!
  • nAl
LTH, you must be a cunning linguist then. My American husband has lived here 14 years and still doesn't always know his lahs from his lehs, his mehs from his hors, or his alamaks from his aiyohs.

    :)
  • Jacq
his dictions are still there. can sense the emphasis on t, d, and stuff.
