More on iSync and the N73

IGNORE EVERYTHING HERE AND UPDATE TO 10.4.9. SYNCS NATIVELY NOW, AND REMEMBER TO REMOVE THIS PLUGIN.

Since I’ve inadvertently become the first hit for “isync N73, there is certain responsibility. Responsbility because: I began to use that phone even before it hit the markets worldwide, there was no information available on how to get it to work with iSync, so I did the most logical thing — edit the MetaClasses.plist, as a stop gap solution. I was fully intending to return to using Sony Ericsson phones after reviewing the Nokia N73, but well, let’s say I’ve surprised myself this time.

Now that this phone has gone on the market, and is proving rather popular, I am getting an influx of N73 users finding my little workaround hack through Google, and through the several Mac forums which had linked it. I don’t use it myself anymore, and here’s why: it frequently gave errors towards the end of syncing, did not update my Address Book properly, and all events created on the phone shows up in a different timezone in iCal, with no way of making it display correctly except manually. I knew it didn’t work well at the time, but I only needed to get my phone book into the new phone, at the time. As I began to use more of the calendaring, to-do and other features of the phone, the limitations of the workaround showed. I restored the original state of the MetaClasses.plist file, and set about to find something that worked better.

Through this site, I found a proper plugin which gave proper sync functionality to the phone. It’s in German, and the site is rather slow (I’ve never managed to get it to load fully), but the direct link to the download works fine. After downloading, drop the plugin into the folder alias (provided there for your convenience), and you’re all good to go. Remember to delete the lines I recommended adding from MetaClasses.plist, because if you don’t the next sync will create double copies of your contacts and events inside your phone.

*Updated: The plugin’s website works now. Here is a translation.

Thanks for the updated link. The iSync plugin works great with my Nokia N93 and so far I have not encountered any problems. For those interested, the Nokia blog provided a picture how-to for the installation.

I tried to make this work with OSX 10.3.9 with isync version 1.5. There is no “plugins” folder under Package Contents.

It looks like both hacks only work with 10.4 and up… Please let me know if I’m mistaken and if so, what is the process for making it work.

    – stuck on 10.3.9…

I floowed your isntrcutons and the isync then recognises N73. As soon as it starts syncing the device the program crashes. (??)

Just put this on my Mac (Macbook 10.4.8) and so far so good. All my address’, phone numbers and calendar items transfered across without any incident. Hopefully it will continue to work.
    Thanks!

I found a similar workaround but by simply changing the N70 references to N73 and it works fine on all fronts.
The remaining annoyance is that when I try to use Address Book to dial or SMS with the phone it asks to pair with the device and after getting a number to use says that it has paired sucessfully then simply doesn’t work and if you hit the Bluetooth tab again it just asks to pair again.
    Anybody have any Ideas?

Thanks, this is awesome. The german site works well. It has also been updated.

Hi everyone! Seems that as of the newest MacOS upgrade (10.4.9) pushed a few days ago, the N73 is supported natively! I at least got an error stating that the plugin I was using (ie. your fix) was incompatible with the current version of iSync. When I removed the plugin I found I could add my phone to iSync without it. Yay! :)

Thanks a lot for your effort in providing this fix, it provided a nice solution in lieu of a native one!

Hmm, yeah I upgraded and now my n73 won’t sync at all. Sure, the new isync adds the phone “natively” but it will not sync. I get a “unknown error”, any ideas why this is STILL not working?

    Try removing the plugin?
