Okay, I Changed My Mind
17 Jul
Blogging isn’t that scary after all, and BloggerCon has a lot to do with it. Another impulsive decision spectacularly reversed.
Those of you who have compulsively refreshed this site will be relieved to see some semblance of life here, after the suspended page notice over the last couple of days. My hosting account was cancelled again, for the same reason as the last, and I took the opportunity to give myself an excuse to sign up for a TextDrive account. As with buying a Mac, hosting with TextDrive isn’t cheap, but you know you’re paying for the best – and knowing that part of what I’m paying for goes to support an open source project of my choice, makes for good karma. At US$25 a month, I’m not going to be able to easily afford it once the “reserves” run out (money previously donated), though I have some idea on what to do to make this site sustain itself, without having to put on any ads. But I’m going to think about blogging revenue when I’m sipping my Chang beer while on holiday.
Site isn’t perfect yet, I hastily threw it together with Wordpress and yet another Theron Parlin theme. Work is needed on .htaccess and rewrites, post slugs, amongst other things. Migrating to my new server was a royal nightmare as I couldn’t restore directly from my Cpanel backup (since TextDrive uses Webmin), and the old MySQL databases were bloated beyond belief in any case. I had to manually copy and paste the data into a new database just so that I could have my old content back. I did like the previous concept that was Textsoap – unfortunately that one has run into issues (pertaining to a trademark infringement), and I suppose I will work on it further.
That’s all for tonight, folks. By the time you are looking at this the domain name will have propagated to its new nameservers, and I will be in bed reeling from the previous night’s work, eyes blinking to the misery of PhpMyAdmin and SQL dumps even when shut, and almost certainly having to beg the missus for forgiveness for oversleeping despite confidently promising otherwise.. sorry baby! (Note to readers: she wants you to know she played an instrumental role in nagging the blogger back into blogging.)
Some important notes: 1. I still need some time to work on cleaning up the feeds. 2. The comment count appears to be displaying one less comment than it should for each entry. Working on that. 3. Working on restoring my subdomains, i.e. the people I host.
P.S. Please send me your BloggerCon photos – especially those in which I have appeared, of course (Zhiyang, I’m looking at you)!
P.P.S. Damn. I’ve missed being a blogger.
