Mac Freeware Watch

A couple of free apps I’m really getting into:
“Transmission”:http://transmission.m0k.org/
The BitTorrent client written in C, not Java (like fugly Azureus). It’s only in v0.2 but it works wonderfully, without the bells and whistles of some other clients, but enough for what I want it to do. (Honorable Other Mention: Bits on Wheels)
“Hide Folders”:http://www.altomac.com/hide_folders/
“With a click you will conceal files and folders with all their contents… With this program you will protect your files avoiding them to be being modified, seen or erased by other users.”
“Vienna”:http://www.opencommunity.co.uk/vienna2.html
A newsreader that’s still in beta, but has much promise. It isn’t NetNewsWire.. but it’s free.
“gDisk”:http://gdisk.sourceforge.net/
Everyone has a Gmail account these days anyway (or a few), so turn your Gmail account into your online drive.
“VideoSpace”:http://digital-heaven.co.uk/videospace/
“VideoSpace is a free widget for Mac OS X Tiger which calculates the disk space required for a given duration, codec, frame rate and audio setting.” Very handy!
“TextPander”:http://www.petermaurer.de/nasi.php?section=textpander
“Textpander is a utility that helps you type more efficiently and more accurately… listens to what you type and inserts predefined text snippets on the fly whenever you enter their corresponding abbreviations.” As with other things Peter Maurer makes (like Witch), it is insanely awesome.
“Disk Inventory X”:http://www.derlien.com/
To check where your disk space has gone.
“Detour”:http://www.rogueamoeba.com/detour/
“Detour lets you control where audio from all your programs is going. Whether you send it to your speakers, your headphones, or mute it all together, you’re in charge.” Or mute some applications’ sounds altogether. I hate it when I’m talking on Skype with my headset and my IM or email clients make loud noises that scare me, so this comes in handy.

Good to have this around but beware of its dangers:
1. The provider have access/read to your info even if data is encrypted; privacy issues
2. They have the right to deny access to your info
3. They analyze your surfing/Internet habits
If use it, password your files, store sensitive files in your personal thumbdrive and secure it.
My 2 cents’ worth.
