I’ve Never

May 31st, 2006  |  Published in dispatch  |  13 Comments

That popular bar game - I’ve Never - ought to be reworked, traveller’s style. For the unacquainted, the game goes like this: a group of people sit around, drinks in hand, and takes turns to say the one thing they’ve never done, e.g. “I’ve never had a threesome”. Everyone who has done that thing, needs to drink, to signify that they have done so. I hate playing this game because I always end up having to drink too much. Travellers’ I’ve Never, howver, is much more discreet, and more of an exercise of ”bragging” rights.

I’ve never… been in a massive thunderstorm for five days in a row.

I’ve never… gone without electricity for four days.

I’ve never… lived in a hut so close to the sea during the onslaught of the monsoon, such that everynight when I sleep in my electricity-less room, I keep wondering if the sea will swallow me.

I’ve never… been in a place where phone lines were down for many days because of a storm.

I’ve never… lived in a place that was being taken apart and dismantled, bit by bit, starting from the beachfront restaurant, to the huts across us, to the huts in front of us, while I was living there, and being the only foreigners left in a place.

I’ve never… wondered around barefoot for 7 nights because my slippers (i.e. my only shoes in India), got stolen.

Yup, if I had to play this game, the last five days would have seen me drinking to every single one of those.

In a few months, I might also have to drink to: “I’ve never… thought I’d go to the world’s wettest place during the rainy season.”

All that has passed and now it’s time to hop onto a bus.. and get Bangalored. Living by the sea for 7 nights, anywhere, is definitely overkill. Time for some big city and Kannada chicken, before my flight home.

You made the session we had at 95 playing ‘ I’ve Never…’ seemed like child’s play when you compare it with the backpacker’s version

    Good one mate!!!
You do get most of the drinks no matter which version you play.

Ha! Good one Ash. I’m sure that that’s the query most of us want a response to, including myself (I’m unashamed to declare). Although hearing (I mean reading) about her travels does seem a more edifying experience than catching the discovery channel. She’s even managed to convince me (the proverbial anti-Indian Indian) that India’s a place I’d want to explore. Although I was already partially convinced by the good looking chicks like Aishwarya (an obviously close friend) and Esha Deol (just an acquaintance).

Yeah… it was going to be Brindavan or Ajanta… or a a splurge at the Ivory Tower, on MG, but of course I never remember anything I plan. Nevertheless. Are hotels in Bangalore expensive or what? Luckily for me my expensive cities (Mumbai, Bangalore), came on my last leg.
