The Worst That Could Happen

To get a fucking err CF just after 6gb of non-stop shooting.

Losing 811 files is one thing; teaching yourself a crash course in computer forensics for image recovery at internet cafes in India at Rs25/hr and 50.2kbps, is another.

i have a jpegrecover tool (its something I whipped up in C, on a taxi ride back at about 5am in the morning), and it will run on OSX/Linux just fine. it recovered all my jpg’s (I didn’t shoot raw back then… but i’d imagine its still fairly easy to change the header matching)

do you want/need it? drop me some mail…

btw, 6gb card? there’s a reason I carry several 1gb cards :P i find that to be safer

the important thing now is, till you’ve recovered the images, don’t overwrite the card. keep it in a safe place till you get 6gb of data back (which you generally will, don’t worry)

yup, still have it sitting here. phew :-)

This is sad.. but dont worry I’ve been in your shoes before. Im so lucky to recover most of the pics but not all in full. Some of it corrupted.

Same advice as Colin. DONT use (writes on) the card anymore unless you have recovered all your files.

managed to retrieve most of it except for the last folder of pictures (which was a pity; i thought some best shots were in there). decided that i would just format the card anyway, to continue using it, instead of being upset about it and spoiling my big trip (i get mortally upset – not just regular upset – when computers and cameras don’t work the way they should, and sometimes i can’t sleep until i solve it :P ).

have a pretty fast 1gb card as a well, that i’m sure is a better option right now compared to my big-ass (and big time slow) CF, but that goes into the point and shoot for stupid pictures and videos of myself drinking lassi.

    oh well.

    what a nightmare.
