Face Off

March 3rd, 2006  |  Published in food and music  |  12 Comments

Some observations on the general state of ‘live’ music from amateur concerts as well as bands in pubs.

  1. The ‘new’ song in vogue for bands with no talent: Harder to Breathe. Anything by Maroon5.
  2. Even with some technical aptitude: attempting Jimi Hendrix, or The Flight of the Bumblebee, is just.. insane. Unless you’re Steve Vai.
  3. What’s up with the Hoobastank, Muse and Linkin Park? Are they the new Pearl Jam and Eric Clapton for cover bands?
  4. I never ever want to hear E.I.C again until they sing new songs.

Am I a music nazi for not wanting my ears abused? Where is the support that real Singapore bands like Vertical Rush, The Suns, and Pensionstate needs?

To detox — Erlend Øye and Kings of Convenience in two weeks. OMFG. My ears.

Oh I know exactly what you’re talking about. Being trapped in a room with EIC is next to torture. You just wish you were home with your own records instead.

i hear you! EIC is still doing maroon 5, hoobastank?! i distinctly remember i stopped goin to wala’s/indochine more than half a year ago, on the days they played, because i got bored of this exact repertoire. horrors, there must be A LOT of people who Like these songs, played on repeat.

Yes, this is why I avoid Wala’s on Fridays and Sundays in particular. And I steer clear of Timbre. Rawr.

    I CANNOT WAIT FOR KOC!

well i wasn’t talking about EIC in particular (in that they didn’t trigger this post) — but you get what i mean, the general state of ‘live’ music. sigh.

Part of it may be venues, I think: Wala’s, Bar None etc. - they’re not really the fun dive bars in which you get random bands, some of which are great, some of which are awful (that’s the downside, as I recall, of some of my old hangouts in Boston) - instead you get a fixed known quality, which unfortunately seems to suit the patrons just fine…

If I hear another cover of “Sweet Child of Mine”, I’ll hara-kiri myself with a fork…

You have to admit though - would you stop to listen to a band who’s playing a song that’s as famous as Sweet Child or a band who’s playing a song you don’t know, where both bands sound average?

POW (Prince of Wales) at Little India gives the stage to a lot of different bands, ought to check that place out. Like maybe on 16th March. ;)

sup! i think i know you from school. first up, add me on msn [note: edited for your privacy :P]. anyways, i’ve only heard “beside me” by pensionstate, but i loved the awakening compilation. you should check out west grand boulevard when they’re playing live- now that’s a promising local band. and the suns should play track 69 on banned in da singapura live (:

i reluctantly admit to playing in a cover band, but really- what can be covered that won’t be boo-ed off stage besides the usual repertoire? blame local tastes if you have to, but musicians play to a crowd and as much as i’d like to do alot of originals, i also want to engage the crowd. been doing abit of recording with an upcoming act so i’ll tell you more about it online!

    ahh…kai,your dop(race till the cars come home)here!!hahaha….yes,shame on you!playing in a cover band with a pitchy singer…hahaha.
hmm….the suns aka boredphucks…lots of teenish memories.I remember watching them getting arresated at localpalooza after they shouted KNNBCCB and a whole load of other expletives to a receptive audience. if i remember correctly, track 69 aka titled “ai sio kan mai” ,was the hidden track correct?it was recorded live on that album,if my memory serves me right.
