This Morning’s Downtown Line Tragedy

Closure of donation drive: TWC2 will stop collecting donations for the victims of the #downtownlinetragedy tonight (Friday 27 July 2012, 2359hrs). For more information please read this link

Edit: The Paypal link we previously posted isn’t working. To donate via Paypal, please to go the donate page on TWC’s website, and click the Paypal icon there.

Clarification: Questions have been raised in various comments about the commission we mention here. Just to be clear, the commissions are charged by the various online payment platforms. We do not receive a single cent or even come close to looking at it. It’s all run through a registered non-profit.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this post. This morning, we awoke to tragic news that two workers had died while building the Downtown Line in Bugis. They were buried alive by cement while pouring wet concrete into a mould. The scaffolding collapsed. They were stuck in the cement and the rescuers had some difficulty prying their bodies out. Investigations are now saying that the wet concrete was almost as heavy as a swimming pool. (link) Whatever the outcome, and whatever its impact on our labour practices will be, there is simply no other way to put this: these guys came here to build our nation, often at great risk to their lives.

Singapore is what it is today because of the migrant workers that have built our structures, poured our wet cement while we were sleeping, dug and laid our roads. It was true when it was Samsui women doing that, and it is even more true now that we have migrant workers from China, Mongolia, India, Bangladesh and other countries coming here in droves in search of a better life, offering their services to us at minimal cost and maximum risk.

As Miyagi said, these guys are doing our national service.

A bunch of us spent all of this afternoon trying to figure out how we can do our part to help. We spoke with various government ministries, who are doing what they can on their part, and to organizations. The organization Transient Workers Count Too, which promotes equitable treatment for migrant workers in Singapore, stepped in. They’ve offered to take in donations for the victims. I must stress that as a non-profit registered under the Societies Act with experience in managing and disbursing donations, they have the structures and practices in place that Miyagi, mrbrown and I do not have. If you have queries about the accounting practices and methods of fund disbursement, feel free to reach out.

In the meantime, what we would like to do is to create an avenue for those of you who want to help to do so. The money goes towards the families of the two deceased workers, as well as to the injured workers who are unable to work while they recover.

This is how you can donate:

BY CHEQUE:

Make a crossed cheque payable to: ‘Transient Workers Count Too’, write your name and “Bugis MRT Accident” at the back of the cheque and mail it to: 5001 Beach Road, #06–27 Golden Mile Complex, Singapore 199588.

Send an email to info@twc2.org.sg with your name, cheque no., amount and “Bugis MRT Accident”, so that the donation can be properly recorded and a receipt sent to you.

BY SGGIVES (ONLINE)

You can donate using your credit card here. A small commission is charged by this donation collection agency. Under the “Special Occasion / Person” field, type “Bugis MRT Accident”.

BY PAYPAL (ONLINE)

You can use your Paypal account or credit card to donate here (scroll down and click the Paypal button). However, a commission of 4% or so is charged on every donation. There is no field for you to input the purpose of donation, so it is advisable to drop twc2 an email after you’ve donated by this method.

Whatever small amount you can offer goes a long way.

would u have even thought of starting this donation driver if the victims were indian nationals?

    • http://www.popagandhi.com/ Adrianna Tan

      Yes.

    • Ching

Jeez, I don’t see how the nationality of the workers make any difference?!?

    • anony

To make the obvious more obvious — YES, we’d have started this donation drive (not ‘driver’ btw) if the victims were Indian nationals.

    • Peeved

What kind of a question is this? Are you even educated?

    • Jacqui

Why does it matter what country they are from? An injured person is an injured person.

  • WENs

Feel that the company will buy insurrance for them and why do we still need to come out with money to help? Every foreign worker will need to have insurrance before coming in to SINGAPORE and donating more money to them? i think this should be SMRT problem and not us!

    • http://www.popagandhi.com/ Adrianna Tan

It’s not about whose problem it is. It’s about helping. It’s okay if you don’t want to.

By the way, the line is being built by SBS not SMRT.

      • http://twitter.com/metacole coleman yee

LTA builds the MRT lines. they hand it over to the operator (SMRT/SBS) after the line is built.

It’s scary how banal money/corporate/racial issues have overwhelmed compassion and humanity.

You should look into the insurance cover for migrant workers. Many of it is on paper only, and when there are workplace accidents or deaths we discover a different reality.

Even if there is insurance, this is an opportunity for Singaporeans to show our sympathy for the victims and their families. As far as I can see, there is no “minimum sum”, or even any forcing of people to donate. You give what you can/want to, or don’t give. It’s really that simple.

If it is found that the workers and their families are indeed covered and compensated adequately by the workman’s compensation cover, then I am quite sure TWC2 will account for it and act accordingly. Meantime, spare a thought for how little these workers earn, and how high a risk they expose themselves to in this line of work.

  • Agatha Wong

I know is sad to hear that, but at least check if there is any insurance coverage before collecting donation. Maybe turn up they are even richer then us. Besides for your info, I am doing general insurance line and seeing alots of China worker damage themself and claim our insurance, and things you never expect.

    • http://www.popagandhi.com/ Adrianna Tan

I’m not sure how being rich helps anybody when they are dead. I’m sorry to hear that is the perception of a Chinese worker but I don’t believe in letting the bad eggs spoil it for a country of a billion people.

    • http://www.facebook.com/eileena.lee Eileena Lee

Hallo? They are dead! Not damaged! Where is your compassion?!?

    • http://www.miyagi.sg/ Mr Miyagi

Do you have statistics on these insurance rorts? Have they been reported as criminal acts? You should if you have seen alots.

  • http://twitter.com/shubhere shub

This is terrible to hear. TWC2 has been doing some fantastic work and I’ve volunteered with them in the past. It is unbearably sad to hear stories from the workers – they’re cheated by touts who they pay tons of money to and get their passports taken away on the promise of a job. They get injured and they need to run from pillar to post to claim compensation, in the meanwhile facing the possibility of being cheated by laywers too. Or the companies abuse them.

It breaks my heart to read these stories – they pay anywhere between 3000 to 8000 SGD, selling lands and what have you to get to Singapore, with big hopes and dreams. It’s awful when they end this way.

  • YM Tan

in my view, the logic here is very straightforward. if you’re in a position to help, help. Race doesn’t matter at all.

Good, Adri. I hope the donation drive helps.

I came to your blog after reading the Yahoo!SG article: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/s-pore-bloggers-in-donation-drive-for-bugis-construction-site-tragedy.html (via Reddit) …and hats off to you for at least having the thought of helping out migrant workers.

I just had to offer you some support because all that I read in the comments for that Yahoo! article were unbelievable insolence and vile gibberish! As if you are robbing people of their livelihood
by *asking* for donations! My opinion of Singaporeans changes day by day (for the worse) but fortunately people like you remind me all isn’t bad among the populace. Akin to what you said: “…letting the bad eggs spoil it for a country of a billion people”

  • Treasurer TWC2

I just wish to add a detail to Adrianna’s point above about commissions. Neither TWC2 nor the bloggers launching this donation drive will take any commission (I believe that was made clear above). Thus, donation by Singapore dollar cheques will attract zero commission.

Donations through SgGIves will involve a 3.0% commission levied by SgGives. This is outside our control.

Donations by Paypal are possible but not recommended. This is because the commission rate levied by Paypal is very high for small amounts. For example, a $10 donation attracts an 8.4% commission rate. However, a $100 donation attracts a 4.4% donation rate, while one around $500 will be approx 3.5%. Paypal uses a complicated sliding scale.

TWC2 is a registered charity with externally audited accounts. We will also be sending the bloggers initiating this exercise a full report on how the funds are disbursed at the end of the exercise.

    Alex Au, Treasurer, TWC2.

Chill out, guys. You’re all allowed to have your own differences in opinions. Whether or not I agree with them, or whether or not you agree with each other (clearly not), please keep all discussion civil and refrain from ‘shouting’.

  • Whocares.

What about the Bangladeshi workers that were injured? Who is going to help them? There have been so many deaths of Bangladeshis and Indian nationals in the past. Not once did i hear of any donation DRIVE for them in the news.

  • Gly

Previous week i had just bought some gifts for the blind grandma and her grandson at amk. How come no one here pity them and help them? Anyway RIP to the two victims , they are covered by insurance company. The construction company also states that they will compensate their families as well. I will pray for them instead , in the mean time please divert your resource to help those unfortunate and needy in our society.

    • http://www.popagandhi.com/ Adrianna Tan

That’s very kind of you. But to say no one here cares for them is to make many assumptions. Many of us here believe in everyday charity and do our part. Other incidents like these call for a different response. Thank you for your prayers.
