On To Phnom Penh and Siem Reap

November 22nd, 2005  |  Published in travel  |  9 Comments

So can I endorse you already? Here goes another advert for you:

“Starting 15 December, Jetstar Asia flies to the city of Phnom Penh on the mighty Mekong, and from 16 December, to the ancient city of Siem Reap, home of the magnificent Angkor Wat. Now, you can discover the Kingdom of Cambodia from only $128! Simply book by 27 November 2005 and travel by 25 March 2006.”

Dare I say the days of flying SilkAir at $700++ are over (with the alternative being the hard roads from Bangkok, or going to KL to take a dinky AirAsia flight)?

Somebody asked me for my genuine opinion on Cambodia, since I’d never articulated it on the open. I think it’s a combination of (1) I’m glad I’ve seen the Angkor Wat and love it (2) but give me Laos or Vietnam any day and (3) the answer to the “sirreee buy me one book” is a loud and resounding “A-Te!”

Nevertheless, that there are now cheap and direct flights to these places creates even more possibilities for overland travel, with half the butt ache. I posted this for the several of you who, swayed by my lovely travel tales (especially Surviving A Shower In A Border Town), plan to make the same trip yourselves.

Even more exciting (to me), Jetstar has partnered with Myanmar Airways International to offer more flights to Yangon. Now you can get to the beauty of Burma for cheap and without the fear of death that one would normally have flying Myanmar Airways as it’s the A320 Jetstar planes.

And if you thought Angkor Wat was magnificent, you should see the temples of Bagan…
